A Child’s Introduction to the Natures of Things (approximately Gr. 4-6)
A Child’s Introduction to the Natures of Things is an introduction to the art of definition.  There is much more to definition than what we usually find alongside a word in a dictionary.  Dictionary definitions are concerned with choosing and using words in speaking and writing.  Important though are, dictionary definitions usually tell us only a little about the nature of the thing that a particular word signifies.
But a definition of the nature of a thing is what we need if we are to have a true understanding of that thing. It is the true understanding of things that is the proper goal of education.  Definition of a thing according to its four kinds of causes is the open door to an understanding of the notion of causality. A cause is something that a thing depends on for its existence.  The meaning of the word cause is not restricted to the person that does or makes something––that is only what we call the “efficient” cause.”  According to Aristotle, there are four kinds of causes.  In addition to efficient causes, the full notion of causality includes three other kinds of causes: formal (the thing’s shape, color, size, etc.), material (what it’s made of), and final (what it’s for, what it can become, etc). The purpose of this book is to teach children how to define and understand the natures of things according to these four kinds of causes.  Ages 7 to 11.
